Gov't will pay GMA's hospital bill: Robredo

MANILA, Philippines – Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo on Friday said the government will shoulder the cost of the hospitalization of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC).
“I’m sure hindi VMMC, but inasmuch as dun sa court order ang magbabayad dito eh gobyerno,” Robredo told ANC.
Pasay City Regional Trial Court Judge Jesus Mupas on Thursday ordered the transfer of the former president from St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig to VMMC.
Arroyo will stay at the hospital’s presidential suite, the same room that her predecessor Joseph Estrada used while he was under trial for plunder. The Philippine National Police (PNP) previously paid for Estrada's hospitalization.
Robredo said the Department of the Interior and Local Government is ensuring that Arroyo will have everything she needs at the hospital.
He dismissed claims that the room is infested with rats and termites.
“Sa anay, hindi ho iyon, walang ganyan,” he said.
However, he admitted the water problem in the hospital has yet to be addressed.
The fully air-conditioned suite measures 150 square meters and has 6 rooms, one for the patient, another for a companion, a dining room, kitchen, and rooms for staff and security.
It also has a reception area and several bathrooms.

INSIGHTS:

As I am reading the article, it really gives me a negative impression or reaction. Of course, as a citizen of the Philippines, it is not just to us Filipinos that the government will pay Arroyo's hospital bill for it is the money of the Filipinos. Yes, maybe she was the former President and she is still part of the government today, but the government is not part anymore about her sickness. And since Macapagal-Arroyo family has enough money, I think they can shoulder the cost of the hospitalization of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, especially that she is confined at St. Luke's Medical Center, which is a very expensive hospital.

But on the other hand, there is still a good side about the issue. Since GMA will be transferred to Veterans Memorial Medical Cenetr (VMMC), which is a government hospital, maybe the cost will be much lesser, if the government will really pay for her bill, and she still avails the services of the government. As she is part of the government, of course she will and should use those benefits from the government. But apart from that, her family should be the one to pay or shoulder her hospitalization and not the government, because every Filipino has a conribution of the government's money and it is wrongful if it will just be used to her hospitalization. "Na-water lang ang tax na binabayaran o ang pera ng mga tao".
